Today we had another stroll around the area where we are staying In Florence – which is in the centre of the city. It is a beutiful place and the weather is wonderful (even if it is a bit hot – only 34ºC today).
We walked along the river and through a myriad of small and interesting side streets with so many cafes and restaurants, gelato (and yes we have had a couple) and so many shops – leather goods, some wonderful shops with specialty papers and pens (that is my calligraphy interest coming out here) and many more. I must confess I had forgotten about Pinocchio until I saw a number of shops featuring him too!
In the middle of the day we took shelter indoors to escape the heat and had lunch. We then ventured out to visit the statue of David. We undertook this visit as part of a guided tour and the tour guide was excellent. On our walk to the Galleria dell’Accademia where the statue resides, the guide talked about Michelangelo and his life and pointed out some places where he had lived in Florence along the way.
At the Galleria the guide continued his narrative and provided a wonderful insight into the sigificance of the statue for the people of Florence as well as explaining how the statue was carved and how it has been restored over the years after being subjected to the elements – including being struck by lightning and touched by people (the statue is now protected by a glass screen to stop people from touching it) albeit the feet – as the statue is 5.17m tall and sits on a base that is about 1.5 to 2m tall.
It was very interesting and well worth seeing.
We then wandered back to the Hotel too freshen up and before having dinner in one of the many restaurants in the area.
I will leave you with a few photos from today.
We have a day long tour planned for tomorrow so I will fill you in on day’s activities tomorow night. Bye for now. Wendy
